There are days when the outside world encourages the inside one. Wind presses against the glass. Light lowers and holds. This is weather for reading. Not skimming. Not collecting. Reading that lets sentences travel the full length of your attention.
Choose a piece that fits the day. Not long for the sake of length, but complete for the sake of shape. Sit well. Let your eyes move at a human pace. If a line asks for a second pass, give it one. If a paragraph asks for a pen in the margin, oblige.
You may find yourself restored by this. You are not withdrawing from the world. You are entering a smaller, careful version of it. When you return to the rest of the day, you bring the benefits of that care with you. Your tone softens. Your patience extends by a few inches. That is winning ground.
This is a good use of winter and it costs very little.
